The St. Christopher is a Dutch built, classic design, three masted, steel
sailing schooner built in 1932, just as the age of sail came to a close.
Built in Delfzijl, Netherlands under the Germanischer Lloyd Certification. She measures approximately 115' at the water
line and is 140' length over all. The vessel is 19' at the beam and draws 6.5'.
She was built to the highest standards carrying a German Lloyd's classification
in her past. The St. Christopher was originally built as a cargo hauler,
structurally designed and built to operate in the roughest sea conditions in the
world, the North Sea. She is a hearty vessel that has, over the years, served her owner's
safely, efficiently and with a certain degree of flare that only a classic
vessel of this type can.
Unfortunately, the St. Christopher found herself, of recent, in the hands of
a group of businessmen who, due to lack of leadership and concern for the
vessel, allowed the St. Christopher to deteriorate into a poor state of repair.
The steel hull, although well built, has not been maintained, and therefore
corrosion has taken it's toll. In addition, during the recent hurricane, George,
the vessel tore loose of it's moorings and drifted free, coming aground on a
clay island in the marshland of southern Mississippi. A recent inspection of the
ship, by a yacht designer and master marine surveyor, has indicated that no structural
damage was done to the vessel during the grounding.
St Christopher Services, LLC has acquired her
and recovery is underway. Through volunteers and donations, we will rebuild and
upgrade her to full U.S. Coast Guard Passenger Carrying Certification. We have a
strong shipbuilding community here on the Gulf Coast, the best in the world.
Individuals and companies are stepping forward with their contributions toward
the restoration.

Our purpose is a service of Christian Love and
Evangelism, to provide for medical missions, storm recovery, etc. We are not
sponsored by any particular church organization, but relying on God's provisions
and our volunteers.
What could be more fun than to be able to experience
this piece of sailing history and to participate in a gift of Christian Love
with your own hands. Indications are that our schedule will be full and St
Christopher will be well maintained and active far into this century. |
